What is LASIK Surgery?

Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis- An advanced laser procedure combining PRK and ALK in order to reshape the central cornea, thereby decreasing or eliminating hyperopia (farsighted, longsighted vision), myopia (nearsighted, shortsighted vision), and astigmatism (irregular cornea). The surgeon uses an automated microkeratome to carve a thin, hinged layer of the cornea. The flap is then lifted and the exposed surface is reshaped using an excimer laser. After altering the corneal curvature, the flap is replaced and adheres with no stitches necessary.

Are you a LASIK candidate?

• Candidates should be at least 18 years old - this ensures the eye has matured and developed properly.
• Your vision must be stable for one year prior to surgery.
• You must have gone at least one year without an eye infection or injury.
• You must not suffer from an autoimmune disorder, such as Sjogren's Syndrome and Lupus.
• You must have no history of herpes infection in the eye - LASIK may induce a recurrence.
• There must be no scarring on the cornea to be considered a LASIK candidate.
• You must understand all of the risks involved with LASIK surgery and have realistic expectations regarding the outcome.
• LASIK candidates should not be pregnant or nursing at the time of procedures - certain hormones cause tissue fluctuations within the eye which can change the refractive error.
• People who suffer from dry eye syndrome.
• If your pupil dilates to more than seven millimeters in the dark - this indicates you would suffer from halos or glare at night.
